Past Concerts: 2007 - 2008

Sunday, October 21, 2007, 4:00 p.m. "Bach to Vivaldi"

The Bach Society of Dayton opened its 2007-2008 Season with an all-Baroque program featuring works by Bach and Vivaldi, two of the most significant composers of the period, whose greatest popularity came long after their deaths. Audience members experienced, perhaps for the first time, what is considered to be Bach’s earliest cantata as well as the familiar “Autumn” from Vivaldi’s most famous composition, “The Seasons.”

Cantata 150 (“Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich”) – Bach
Cantata 34 (“O ewiges Feuer, O Ursprung der Liebe!”) – Bach
Autumn from “The Seasons” – Vivaldi
  Chamber Mass – Vivaldi

Soloists:
Elizabeth Wiley Taylor, Soprano
Christina Gill, Mezzo Soprano
Mark Spencer, Baritone

Sunday, December 2, 2007, 7:30 p.m. "Sweet Sounds of the Holidays"

In our traditional Holiday concert, the singers of the Bach Society of Dayton, along with the Kettering Children’s Choir directed by Natalie DeHorn and the Kettering Advent Ringers directed by Joan Dorgan, joined the singers of the Bach Society of Dayton in presenting a heart-warming selection of seasonal music, both old and new.

Sunday, March 16, 2008, 4:00 p.m. “Motets and More”

The centerpiece of this concert featured two of Bach’s six motets: BWV 228, possibly the first that he wrote, and BWV 225, felt by many to be his most significant motet. As part of our continuing focus on community outreach and in keeping with our goal to help encourage the next generation of choral singers, selected Xenia High School students under their director, Brent Manley, will be integrated joined into the Bach Society of Dayton Chorus for the motet performances, in an event called “Project Sing."

  “Salve Regina” – Joseph Haydn
  “Venite Populi” K 260 – Mozart
Motet: “Fürchte dich nicht” BWV 228 – Bach
Concerto in D, Minor BWV 1052 – Bach
    Yun Kyong Kim, Harpsichord
Motet: “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied” BWV 225 – Bach
This concert was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.

Sunday, May 11, 2008, 7:30 p.m. "A Celebration of Spring"

In a refreshing change of pace, the Bach Society presented a “mostly 20th Century” program of music, from the serious to the joyous. The Vaughan Williams “Mass in G Minor” was a fitting capstone to our 6th season, and the Dello Joio “A Jubilant Song” sent the audience out the door wanting to come back for more.

Mass in G Minor – Vaughan Williams
  Frostiana – Randall Thompson
Music to Hear – A Choral Suite - music by George Shearing; words by Shakespeare
A Jubilant Song – Norman Dello Joio

Soloists:
Andrea Chenoweth, Soprano
Liza Forrester, Mezzo Soprano
Randall Black, Tenor
Jeremy Kelly, Baritone
